3.8. Check of brake system and coupling

The dust being formed as a result of wear of slips and accumulating on components of the brake mechanism, can contain asbestos hazardous to health. Do not blow this dust by means of the compressed air and do not inhale it! Do not use for dust removal solvents on the basis of gasoline.


Except checks through the established intervals of time a condition of brake mechanisms it is necessary to carry out each time at removal of wheels or at emergence of signs of malfunction in brake system. Check of level of brake liquid is described in the Section Check of levels of liquids, control of leaks.

Signs of malfunctions in brake system

Any of listed below signs can point to potential defect of brake system:

  1. When squeezing a pedal of a brake during movement the car "withdraws" in one party;
  2. Brake mechanisms when braking publish scraping or squealing sounds;
  3. The pedal of a brake has an excessive course;
  4. The pedal of a brake pulses (it normally only at ABS system work);
  5. Leakages of brake liquid (usually appreciable tires on inside or wheels) are observed

In case of detection at least one of these signs immediately examine brake system.

Brake lines and hoses

In brake system metal brake tubes, except for the flexible reinforced hoses at wheels are generally used. Regular survey of all these lines is very important.


 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Park the car on an equal platform.
  2. To Poddomkratta the car also establish it on props then remove wheels. Check of vacuum hoses is given in the Section Check of a condition and replacement of hoses and tubes in an impellent compartment, localization of leaks.
  3. Check all brake lines and hoses on existence of cracks and attritions in their external covering, and also leaks, swellings and deformations. Check brake hoses in forward and back parts of the car on existence of signs of a softening, cracks, deformations or wear as a result of a friction about other details. Check all shtutserny connections on existence of signs of leaks and make sure of reliability of all fixture of brake lines.
  4. Bend hands in one and other parties a brake hose to reveal damages. To braid hoses does not follow.
  5. Turn a steering wheel to the right and to the left against the stop. Make sure that hoses thus do not touch elements of a design of the car.
  6. At detection of leakages of liquid from brake lines or their damages of leak it is necessary to eliminate immediately. For more detailed description of procedure of repair of brake system address to Head Brake system.

Check of thickness of brake shoes and disks

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. To Poddomkratta the car also establish it on props then remove the corresponding wheel.

Experience shows that owing to availability of dirt on the brink of the road wear of brake shoes of the right wheel more than left. Therefore for check it is meaningful to remove a forward right wheel.

  1. Measurement of thickness of a block of a forward disk brake is made through a special control window in a support. If the thickness of a block makes less than 2 mm, replace all blocks of both brake mechanisms of forward wheels.

As a rule, 1 mm of wear of a frictional overlay of a brake shoe corresponds, at least, 1000 km of run under adverse service conditions. In usual conditions of a slip are erased much more slowly.

  1. For check of thickness of a block of a back (drum-type) brake поддомкратьте the car also examine blocks from within a disk. In doubtful cases measure thickness of a block at the removed brake drum. If it makes less than 1.5 mm replace all blocks of both brake mechanisms of back wheels.
  1. Check supports of brake mechanisms on existence of leaks. At detection of leaks urgently repair a support.
  2. Visually check brake disks and drums from internal and outer side on existence of furrows, a rust and cracks. Defective components replace.
  3. Measure thickness of brake disks in several places by means of a micrometer or a special calliper. It is possible to measure also thickness of a brake disk by a usual calliper, having enclosed from each its party a lining of known size (for example, two coins), and then having subtracted from the measured value thickness of linings.
  4. Measure internal diameter of brake drums.
  5. Compare minimum of the results received in everyone case to requirements of Specifications. If the limit of wear is reached, replace surely both brake disk or a drum. Also it is necessary to replace a brake disk/drum and at big cracks or deep furrows on a working surface.

Check and adjustment of pedals of a brake and coupling, and also lever of the parking brake

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Measure size of a free wheeling (A) and height (H1) of the released pedal of a brake.
  1. Make similar changes for a coupling pedal.
  2. If the measured sizes do not correspond to requirements of Specifications, adjust a brake pedal according to an illustration. For this purpose give a lock-nut, screw or turn out the sensor of provision of the corresponding pedal and fix it a lock-nut.
  3. Cock the parking brake, having pulled for the lever of its drive with 196 N.Pri etom's strength 11-12 clicks should be heard. Otherwise adjust the parking brake as it is described below.
  1. Insert a face key into a gap in the lever of the parking brake and give a nut completely to weaken a cable of a drive of the parking brake. Release the lever of a drive of the parking brake.
  1. Squeeze out a pedal of working brakes 2-3 times to choose a gap of brake shoes.
  2. Rotating back wheels, make sure of smoothness of their course.
  3. Pull the lever of a drive of the parking brake that the adjusting nut was available, and by its rotation adjust the parking brake.

After a nut otdavaniye its repeated use is not admissible.

  1. Having cocked the parking brake 3-4 times with strength of 196 N, make sure of correctness of its adjustment. Then at the released parking brake make sure of smoothness of a course of back wheels.

Check of the vacuum amplifier of brakes

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. At the switched-off engine several times squeeze out a brake pedal, – with each pressing its course should decrease.
  2. At the squeezed-out pedal of a brake start the engine, – the pedal should move down.
  3. Holding a pedal of a brake squeezed out, muffle the engine. If when keeping pedal within 30 seconds its course does not change, the vacuum amplifier as it should be.
  4. If one of listed above checks yielded unsatisfactory result, repair or replace the vacuum amplifier (see. Head Brake system).

Check of tightness of the control valve of the vacuum amplifier

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Check is made by connection of the manual vacuum pump to the different parties of the control valve and depression creation in it.
  1. At pump connection from the vacuum amplifier (1) and creation of depression of 66.7 kPas, it can decrease on 1.3 kPas in 15 seconds.
  2. At pump connection from the engine (2) depression should not arise.
